HOW THE VOLT'S MOTORS WORK: the 2012 Volt is a plug-in hybrid that uses an electric motor powered by a rechargeable fuel cell (battery) for the first 35-40 miles. Once the battery depletes, the 1.4-liter 4 cylinder gas engine takes over running on premium gas acting like any normal car. Charging is done via a standard wall outlet charger that comes with it or you can buy a Level 2 (240v) charger. When the gas is low you fill it like any other regular vehicle.
